01 / Enoki tree

A giant tree known as a muku treeproved to be an enoki on survey.

In Ichiu's Kage district, it has a trunk 8.7 m around and stands 18 m tall. A town document says that until a 1998 survey identified it as an enoki (Chinese hackberry), locals had regarded it as a muku tree. It was designated a National Natural Monument in 2004 and is also the town's tree. It fell in 2022; the town is working on its recovery and restricts entry.

02 / Two-tier udatsu

An udatsu is a roofed side wall projecting from both sides of a building, serving as a firebreak and decoration. Along Sadamitsu's shopping street of about 700 m, udatsu remain on the houses, and two-tier houses stand in a row. The main house of Orimotoya was built in 1772 (Meiwa 9) and is a nationally registered tangible cultural property.

03 / Habashikoku 88 sites

Ten halls of Habashikoku arenationally registered cultural properties.

Habashikoku is an 88-site pilgrimage circuit centered on the Habayama area, and its halls were built between the mid-Edo and Meiji periods. Most are three-bay square halls; Bessho-do is Site 11 and Kira-do is Site 30. The town's tourism office says the route runs as long as 80 km.

Located in Mima District in western Tokushima Prefecture, the town covers 194.84 km2. It was formed on March 1, 2005, by the merger of Handa, Sadamitsu, and Ichiu. The Yoshino River flows along the north of the town, and Mt. Tsurugi, 1,955 m above sea level, rises in the south. The station the town's access guide names for alighting is Sadamitsu Station on the JR Tokushima Line.

  1. 01Sadamitsu Gekijo (貞光劇場) is a former playhouse in the center of Sadamitsu, Tsurugi, built in 1932 and registered as a national registered tangible cultural property in 2025. Its front has an entrance with a large-span arch, and the trade name and theater name are written large above it.
  2. 02Tsurugi lies in western Tokushima Prefecture and was formed in 2005 by the merger of Handa, Sadamitsu, and Ichiu. The Yoshino River flows along the north, and Mt. Tsurugi, 1,955 m above sea level, stands to the south.
  3. 03The Handa area has Handa hand-stretched somen noodles, with a history of over 300 years; the drying of the noodles in yards after the autumn festivals has become a winter sight. In Sadamitsu, a modern version of the "Kuichi" market, held from the Edo period until after the war, takes place, and the nembutsu dances of Kiya-do and Kawami-do are designated Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Properties.
