The city says the Masuda family served as daishoya, senior village headmen, over 20 surrounding places in the Edo period. The main house was built in Hoei 3 (1706), a hip-and-gable building with a full tile roof. The main house and the front gate became Important Cultural Properties in 1969, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the house valuable as a daishoya residence of known date.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs' explanation says that medieval Negoroji is said to have made utensils, mainly lacquerware, and that from a tradition that these were mostly red lacquer, red-lacquered ware came to be called Negoro-nuri. It adds that the reality at Negoroji is not well known. The city says the red altar of Shotendo dates from the Muromachi period, and the Iwade City Museum of Folklore runs Negoro-nuri classes.

Iwade City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The Former Wakayama Prefectural Assembly Hall was built in 1898 at Ichibancho, Wakayama City. Members passed from the main building to the chamber through an open dirt-floored corridor, going outside to enter, and the hall became an Important Cultural Property in 2017
  2. 02The hall where Natsume Soseki lectured in 1911 was moved into the grounds of Negoroji Temple in 1962 and named Ichijokaku. Its chamber had been turned around and the annex rooms lost; a conservation project in fiscal 2012-2015 restored it to its original form
  3. 03The Daito of Negoroji Temple is a National Treasure and its grounds are a national Historic Site. The city also has the Important Cultural Property Masuda residence and the national Historic Site Nishi-Kokubu Pagoda Ruins. Negoro-nuri, the name for red-lacquered ware, is said to come from the utensils of medieval Negoroji
