01 / Tennomori Tumulus

Its sword-shaped haniwa closely resemblefinds from Imashirozuka, said to be a royal tomb.

A 45 m keyhole-shaped tumulus, thought to date from the first half of the 6th century. The restored sword-shaped haniwa stands about 120 cm tall. The quiver-shaped haniwa are the first found in the prefecture, and are said to be strikingly similar to examples from the kiln site that supplied Imashirozuka Tumulus, identified as the tomb of Emperor Keitai.

02 / Hanaoka's Pagoda and Great Sword

In Hanaoka, a post town on the old Sanyo Road,a treasure pagoda and a 345.5 cm great sword.

The treasure pagoda (tahoto) of Akaibo temple is 13 m tall and a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The Haja no Ontachi at Hanaoka Hachimangu has a 345.5 cm blade and weighs 75 kg; it was dedicated in 1859. A votive painting (ema) from 1797 depicts a festival procession of the time.

  • Said to be one of 16 pagodas built by Fujiwara no Kamatari, but estimated to date from the mid-to-late Muromachi period

03 / Fukaura Kangen Festival

On the night of the 17th day of the 6th lunar month,a lantern-lit boat heads for the sea shrine.

From Fukaura Pier on Kasado Island, a sailing boat hung with fifty-odd lanterns sets out. It pays respects to the Myojin shrine standing in the sea, then circles Kasado Bay as far as the Ojo lodge, praying for safety at sea. It is held on the 17th day of the 6th lunar month each year, and took place in 2025 as well.

Kudamatsu lies in southeastern Yamaguchi on the Seto Inland Sea. It borders Hikari and Shunan to the east, and Shunan to the north and west. The circumference of Kasado Island is 36 km. The city was founded in 1939 by merging Kudamatsu Town with Hanaoka, Kubo and Suetake-minami villages, and took in Yonegawa Village in 1954.
