01 / Clay pagoda kiln

In the late Heian period, clay pagodaswere fired in a kiln in the hills.

On Gongendo hill in Tsukiyone, a kiln site was found where clay pagodas in the shape of a hoto, or treasure pagoda, were fired. The town's excavation report dates it to the late Heian period and records two kilns. The excavated clay pagodas, 1,088 pieces, are designated by the prefecture. At nearby Myoo-ji Temple, a bronze gong dated 1224 is a national Important Cultural Property.

  • Two kilns
  • 1,088 clay pagodas (prefectural designation)
  • Gong dated 1224

This two-storey wooden school building, completed in September 1876 (Meiji 9), is a prefectural designated building. A drum was beaten in the hexagonal tower on its roof to tell the time, and it is known as Taikodo, the drum hall. The prefecture says it keeps the exterior of the so-called Fujimura style well. The town's history says it was later moved and rebuilt.

03 / River quay

Loading platforms at the quaywere narrower in Meiji than in Edo.

Kajikazawa was a quay on the Fuji River route, opened in the early Edo period. Excavations ahead of road works found loading platforms in front of the rice storehouse: 1.2 to 1.5 m wide in the Edo period, 50 to 80 cm in the Meiji period. The change is thought to reflect cargo shifting from rice bales to salt and other goods.

  • Edo period: 1.2 to 1.5 m wide
  • Meiji period: 50 to 80 cm wide
  • Opened in the early Edo period
