01 / Ichinose mulberry

The original mulberry that spread nationwideis said to stand before the Ichinose house.

A prefecture-designated Natural Monument. The town records that a man named Ichinose found a fine individual among mulberry seedlings he had bought and used it as the original stock. The town also records that an Excellence Award was conferred at a sericulture fair in 1916. The prefecture says the “red” and “blue” forms planted in the field in front of the Ichinose house are the originals of what spread across the country.

02 / Tomikuji

To repair the shrine,a lottery was permitted in Bunsei 12.

The town records that the administrator of Uwato Shrine petitioned to hold a tomikuji lottery to pay for repairs, and permission came on the 27th day of the 11th month of Bunsei 12. Tickets did not sell well around Ueno and Ichikawa, so the lottery ran for three years at a shrine in Yamada, Kofu. The box used, with its wooden tags and spear, is said to be kept, and is a town-designated folk material.

03 / Ichikawa Church

A plaster-finished chapel is the focal pointof the street the town calls Past and Present.

A nationally registered tangible cultural property, which the town describes as built in 1897 (Meiji 30). The single-storey wooden building has a pantile roof and one interior room, with a semicircular altar at the front. The town says its plaster-finished exterior is the central presence on the street it calls “Past and Present.”
