01 / Fujikoto harvest dance

Two groups of young men, splitby an old bridge, dance apart.

The main settlement of Fujikoto is divided at the old stone bridge in front of the town hall. Along the Fujikoto River, the upstream group is called Kami and the group on the other side Shimo, and the two groups have performed the dance. Their dances and music differ. On the eve and the day of the shrine festival they parade through town in the manner of a lord's procession. It is said to trace back to the road entertainment of Lord Satake's retainers when he moved to Akita, in the seventh year of Keicho.

The 400-year beech of the Dakedai Nature Observation and Education Forest was a giant, 4.85 m around and 26 m tall. Its name began when the rings of a giant that fell between 1975 and 1984 were estimated at 400 years, and this beech, of the same build, came to be called by it. The photo dates from 2011. It was found fallen in March 2022 and is kept on the spot.
