01 / Hiranai keibai

On the first night of Obon, in the cemetery,a prayer dance for ancestors is performed.

On the first night of Obon, the Hiranai keibai performs a grave nenbutsu in a cemetery clearing, then dances at graves and before household altars across the old Hiranai Village. Nine dancers and six musicians circle a hexagonal lantern to the right; the dance is called "haneru."

  • 9 dancers, 6 musicians
  • Prefectural folk culture property (designated October 6, 1959)
  • Selected by the national government (January 31, 1978)
  • The prefecture says it came from Kesen; the town says it was danced to mourn Benkei, so the origin is not stated

02 / Tomyodo site and pagoda site

To keep ships safe at sea,a lantern hall was built in 1730.

The Tomyodo site stands in the hills. Many ships were wrecked near Kobunato Cape, and a monk built the hall in 1730. Records of the Hachinohe domain confirm that the domain paid for its lamp oil, and the town says it was likely treated as an important domain facility.

  • Built in 1730 by a monk
  • Lamp oil paid by the domain (confirmed in Hachinohe domain records)
  • The pagoda site at Terashita dates to 1745
