Akagi Shrine stands on a small hill shaped like an upturned bowl. It is said to have formed from soil that flowed down from Mt. Akagi in Joshu, and the city calls it the setting of the legend behind the name Nagareyama ("flowing mountain"). The great shimenawa, twisted from three ropes, is said to be about 6.5 m long and about 500 kg, and hangs until the following year.
