The residence stands on the edge of a terrace facing the Edo River to the west, with a moat curving along its west side. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the garden before the study as a simple, plain scene of stepping stones set only on a broad lawn. The main house and tea room were enlarged between the late Meiji and early Showa periods, adding modern touches.

Short-necked clam and brackish-water clamlayers lie close, with different pottery.

A 1927 excavation by the Tokyo Anthropological Society found layers of short-necked and hard clams lying very close to layers of Yamato brackish-water clams, and confirmed that the pottery differed greatly from layer to layer. The city says the difference in layers speaks of the effect of climate change.

The Chiba Prefectural Board of Education says the main hall of Atago Shrine shows the traits of late Edo shrine building: unpainted plain wood with heavy use of carving. Turtles in waves and dragons are carved on the bracket sets under the veranda, and children at play (karako-asobi) on the panels. The city records the carving as the work of the second Ishihara Tsunehachi.
