Matsudo Kakunosuke, a 13-year-old born in the former Ohashi village (now Ohashi, Matsudo), replanted a small pear tree found at a relative's house at his own home. Ten years later, in 1898, he succeeded in growing ripe fruit. This became the Nijisseiki pear. Saplings were sent to Tottori Prefecture in 1904, and the original tree died in 1947.

Yanagihara Suiko was built in 1904 (Meiji 37) to regulate the flow of the Sakagawa River. A brick sluice with four arches, made before reinforced concrete became common, it has a distinctive look, with stones of differing sizes in the arches. The city calls it a valuable civil-engineering structure that conveys Meiji-era brick-laying methods.
