Fukuoka City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The Genko Borui (元寇防塁) is a stone wall (ishitsuiji) that the Kamakura shogunate had built along Hakata Bay's coast in Kenji 2 (1276), and a National Historic Site. In the Ikinomatsubara section in Nishi Ward, the stones are pegmatite on the west side and sandstone on the east, and the city says this may mark the areas assigned to Hizen and Higo.
  2. 02On Shikanoshima in Higashi Ward stands the place where a farmer is said to have found the gold seal (漢委奴國王) in 1784; the gold seal, a National Treasure, is displayed at the Fukuoka City Museum. The Minamimaru Tamon-yagura (南丸多聞櫓) at the Fukuoka Castle site, nationally designated, was dismantled and restored over two and a half years from 1972.
  3. 03The Fukuoka Castle moat is where Cyperus ohwii (ツクシオオガヤツリ, Tsukushi-ogayatsuri) was first found in the world in 1906 (Meiji 39), and it still grows there as a prefectural natural monument. The plant has also been found in ponds elsewhere in the city.
