In Antoku district, the place name of the settlement where the elders live is Uso (ウソ), nicknamed Uson-dani (ウソん谷). The city newsletter records a tradition that it comes from villagers keeping up a lie, "We know nothing," to the Genji forces asking where Emperor Antoku had gone. At the shrine Antoku-gu (安徳宮), which enshrines the emperor, the Tenno-sama Gomori event has been held on the Sunday before his death anniversary (April 24).

Nakagawa City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Sakutano Unade (裂田溝) is a canal about 5.5 km long in total that draws water from the Naka River at Ichi-no-ide (一の井手) and runs through Antoku, Goromaru and Matsuki to Imamitsu. It has been recorded since the Nihon Shoki (日本書紀). Its slope drops about 20 cm every 100 m.
  2. 02The Nihon Shoki has a passage in which the digging of the canal was blocked by a huge rock at Todoroki Hill (迹驚岡, now Antokudai), until lightning struck, split the rock and let the water through. The city's booklet presents the granite bedrock found behind Sakuta Shrine as a discovery that supports this account.
  3. 03The city also holds the national historic site Antoku Otsuka Tumulus, the Iwato Kagura (岩戸神楽, a prefecturally designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property) of Fushimi Shrine, the city-designated historic site Marunokuchi Tumulus Cluster, and the torii of Arahito Shrine inscribed "Shotoku 4."
