01 / Post town

A post town was built up as thesouthernmost post town of the Soma Nakamura domain.

The town's cultural property plan says the post town was developed as the southernmost post town of the Soma Nakamura domain and became a hub of traffic. It also notes that many old documents of the Nakano family, who oversaw goods and people there, survive. It describes a milestone site as a pair of mounds, a town-designated historic site.

  • Southernmost post town of the Soma Nakamura domain
  • Nakano family documents
  • Milestone mounds: town-designated site (April 1, 1973)

02 / Residences

Residences keeping a retainer's layout:the Ishida and Watanabe houses are nationally registered.

The town's plan describes the Ishida and Watanabe houses in a district of the town as buildings built between the late Edo and early Meiji periods that keep the layout of the residence of a retainer of the domain. Four Ishida buildings were registered in 2019 and five Watanabe buildings in 2021.

  • 9 nationally registered tangible cultural properties
  • Ishida: December 5, 2019
  • Watanabe: February 4, 2021

03 / Place name

The old record names Kuma no Mura, thought to lie around the Kuma district.

The town's plan says the Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki records Kuma no Mura as the northern end of the Taka Kuni no Miyatsuko territory, and that it is thought to correspond to the area around today's Kuma district. One theory places it around the old post town.

  • Kuma no Mura
  • Northern end of the Taka territory
  • Thought to be around the Kuma district
