01 / Yuki Tsumugi
Hand-spun thread, hand-tied ikat, a ground loom:the three conditions required.
Yuki tsumugi (plain weave), designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property by the state in 1956, must meet three conditions. The thread is hand-spun from silk floss with no strongly twisted yarn, any ikat patterns are tied by hand, and the cloth is woven on a ground loom (jibata). Only those who have honed these techniques for 20 years or more are recognized as holders.
