The ring-shaped earthwork at the Teranohigashi Site extends in a semicircle about 165 m in outer diameter and about 15 to 30 m wide. Its inner area was dug down, in stages, to below the Kanuma pumice layer, and brown soil mixed with pumice was piled thickly on the upper outer part. The Agency for Cultural Affairs writes that great earthworks were carried out intermittently over some 700 years from the beginning of the Late Jomon period.
