The ginkgo in front of the worship hall at Nogi Shrine was designated a prefectural natural monument in 2026. Its base is ringed by a stone wall 8.1 m on a side and about 80 cm high, and worshippers are barred from entering. Drawn to the "breasts" hanging from its branches, people still offer breast-shaped cloths filled with rice bran and the like.

02 / Shrine

On the shogun's pilgrimage to Nikkō,the first rest on the third day out of Edo.

Tomonuma Hachiman Shrine was used as the first rest stop on the third day out of Edo during the shogun's pilgrimages to Nikkō. A rest house reserved for the shogun, Unsei-an, was built on the grounds, and Mt. Tsukuba could be seen far off straight ahead. Above the worship hall is a votive picture offered in 1884 to mark the completion of work on the Tomonuma river wharf.

In the grounds of Manpuku-ji Temple stands an itabi, a slab-shaped stone memorial, set up in the first year of Shōgen (1259). The town records that it is made of Chichibu green schist and is thought to be the oldest in the prefecture. The grounds also hold the grave of Inawashiro Kensai, who studied linked verse under Sōgi; in his last years he is said to have been invited by Ashikaga Shigeuji and to have died at 78.
