As Japanese silver grass spread and iris dwindled, cutting began with the Agency's permission.

Mikazuki Pond, a national Natural Monument, is in Koba. The town's site (updated June 2023) says wild iris has declined as silver grass has spread, so the grass is cut in late June and mid-October with permission from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Flowering is usually late May to June, peaking in mid-June.

Takenaka Pond's spring yields 93,000 tonnes a day, and the town says its source is thought to lie in the Kirishima mountains because its composition is close to that of Shinyu. The Tsutsuhano irrigation channel it feeds was chosen as one of Japan's 100 Selected Irrigation Channels in fiscal 2005 and still supplies farmland.

A catalogue by the Kyushu Regional Development Association gives its length as 67.4 m, with two bores each 0.92 m wide and four rings of brick.
