01 / Ushigoe Festival

A festival where cattle are madeto leap a 50-centimeter log pole.

The prefecture designated this festival an intangible folk cultural property in 1992. The city's list records it as held on July 28 (June 28 in the old calendar) in the grounds of Sugawara Shrine (菅原神社). A prefectural document says its start is unknown and, citing a survey from around 1941 to 1942, that 700 to 800 cattle once gathered from all directions.

02 / Shimauchi Tomb No. 139

From a tomb whose chamber lies underground,a large set of grave goods came out intact.

Shimauchi Tomb No. 139 is an underground chamber tomb (地下式横穴墓) of the late 5th to early 6th century, found in 2014. The city explains that a regional chieftain's tomb holding a large set of grave goods from 1,500 years ago was found in complete condition. In 2016 an ironworking tool decorated with inlay was also found, and the finds from the tomb group are a National Important Cultural Property.

03 / Kyoho Waterway

From the intake weir to a bridge near its end,four stone works are registered cultural properties.

The weir on the upper Sendai River is the intake weir that brings water into the Kyoho Waterway (享保水路). The Taiko Bridge (太鼓橋), about 3km downstream, is a stone arch bridge 34m long that carries a 1.6m-wide channel on its top. The weir, Taiko Bridge, Aitai Bridge (靉靆橋) and a fourth bridge near the waterway's end (大平落中橋) became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2004.
