Hashimitsu Bridge (橋満橋) was built by volunteer work, with local people buying the materials. As rebar was unobtainable in wartime, bamboo-reinforced concrete and stone were used. Ishigori Bridge (石氷橋), a wooden bridge of 1892, became a two-arch stone bridge in 1943 and is also called the spectacles bridge.

Suki-no-taki (須木の滝), also called Mamako Falls, was designated a prefectural place of scenic beauty in 1933. It once dropped 41m into a plunge pool 22m deep, but the Ayaminami Dam (綾南ダム) created Lake Ono (小野湖), the water rose, and the drop is now nearly half. At the lake bottom lay the Ono (小野) district, whose residents had to relocate.

  • Once 41m high, plunge pool 22m deep
  • Ayaminami Dam completed 1958
  • Prefectural scenic site: 1933

Kobayashi City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Inyoseki (陰陽石) is a pair of strange rocks in the Hamanose River. The city's site says Kirishima volcanic-belt lava formed them: the male rock is 17.5m tall, the female rock 5.5m around. A legend says a dragon rising to heaven was smitten by a beauty and came down.
  2. 02About 3.5km of the Iwase River (with some sections excluded) is a national natural monument, the habitat of Oyodokawagoromo (オオヨドカワゴロモ). The city-designated Hashimitsu Bridge was built in 1943, and the city-designated Ishigori Bridge became a stone bridge in the same year.
  3. 03Suki-no-taki is a prefectural scenic site whose drop became nearly half because of Ayaminami Dam. The city lists Inyoseki, Sannomiya Gorge (三之宮峡) and Suki-no-taki among its Kirishima Geopark highlights, and writes that about 90 Tanokami (田の神) stone figures remain in the city.
