The Nikaryo Canal joined at Kuji, and in the Edo period its water was divided among four channels by a divider called bunryotoi, but the division was never accurate and water disputes did not stop. In 1941, during the rebuilding of the Hirase River, the Kuji cylindrical water divider was built. The water passes under the Hirase River, rises, and splits into the four channels.
