01 / Haneji River Monument

Sai On studied the river's flow by feng shuiand rebuilt it in 3 months with about 100,000 people.

In 1735 Sai On, a Sanshikan minister of the Ryukyu Kingdom, began a major rebuilding of the repeatedly flooding Haneji Okawa River. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries says he surveyed its flow by feng shui and finished in 3 months with about 100,000 people. The Kaiketsu Haneji-gawa Hiki monument, raised by farmers, is a prefectural historic site.

02 / Hinpun Gajumaru of Nago

The tree's name Hinpun Gajumaru is also saidto come from the monument beside it, shaped like a screen.

This giant tree in downtown Nago, estimated at 240 years old and 19 m tall, has long been revered as a sacred tree. Okinawan houses often have a screen wall called a hinpun between gate and main house, to block views and keep out evil spirits. Beside the tree stands the Sanpu Ryumyaku monument, raised in the old domain era.

03 / Kawakami Strung Lions

Two lions worked by stringshave coins tied to their feet for weight.

The strung lion dance of Kawakami is the final piece of the harvest festival offering dances. One person works each of the male and female lions by strings tied to the head and rump. A few coins tied to the feet add weight and sound. With Izumi in Motobu and Jana in Nakijin, it is a national selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
