01 / Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War

The straw is bought from Yaka district in Kin.The rope is twisted by the town's 13 districts, by assignment.

The straw came from nearby villages before the war, and from the Yanbaru region afterward. Today 5,000 tsubo, about 5 tonnes, is bought from Yaka district in Kin Town. The 13 districts twist ropes by assignment and bundle them east and west into a great rope 50 ken (90 m) long, with branch ropes partway along.

02 / Yanbarusen and Sunchaa

Yanbarusen shipping and horse carts joined up,and Yonabaru Village established itself as a hub.

In 1903, once land readjustment freed former royal land, people who had come from Shuri and Naha used it as a base to start shipping by maransen ships (yanbarusen). That year the Sashiki road linking Naha opened, and horse-cart hauling began. The town website presents Yonabaru as a port town that prospered on yanbarusen and horse-cart drivers (sunchaa).
