01 / Haebaru Hana-ori

Flower-like, three-dimensional patternscarry names such as Kwankwan and Chip Gasa.

It was designated a national traditional craft in 2017, and its main production area is Haebaru Town. Its patterns have distinctive names such as Kwankwan Hanaori, Chip Gasa and Kiyan Hachimai. The town says its own techniques were established from the skills of earlier generations and from women who learned flower weaving at the village girls' supplementary school, founded in 1914.

02 / Tobi Asato

The story of a man who flew on wingsis handed down in Tsukayama.

In the late 18th century, Tobi Asato, who lived in Tsukayama, is said to have flown on flapping wings for nearly 150 to 200 meters, from Shitatimui (now the site of Tsukayama Elementary School) to the Tsukayama community hall. Accounts differ on who he was, and a memorial was erected in 1991.

03 / Site of the Writing School

A man who learned during service in Shuriopened a place of learning for Miyahira's children.

A monument marking the site of the writing school stands at the Miyahira community center. The town says a man from Miyahira opened it in 1868 to teach children the reading, writing and arithmetic he had learned during service in Shuri, and calls it the first educational facility in the Shimajiri area.

There is no railway station in the town. The town says it takes about 10 minutes by Yui Rail from Naha Airport to Asahibashi Station, about 30 minutes by route bus from Asahibashi to Kanegusuku intersection, and about 15 minutes on foot from there to the Haebaru Culture Center. It also describes itself as the only town in the prefecture that does not touch the sea.
