In the mid-Edo period, the Dutch-learning scholar Hashimoto Sokichi and the head of the Naka family carried out an experiment in electrical induction using a pine in the grounds of Naka House, a national Important Cultural Property. Sokichi's book on the elekiteru presents it as a diagram of drawing down fire from heaven in the Kumatori valley of Senshu. Osaka Prefecture says the pine has died.
