01 / Yoshimiwase onion

A seed kept about 20 years in a tin under a floorsprouted in a germination test.

Yoshimiwase is a flat onion that could no longer be shipped to the farmers' cooperative in the late 1980s and vanished from the town. In 2006 a farmer's tins of seed, kept under his floor for about 20 years, came to light; at a prefectural technology centre, three tins averaged 40.7% germination. The town writes that it was revived after 20 years.

  • About 20 years in tins under a floor
  • Average germination 40.7% (three tins)
  • Cultivation resumed in fiscal 2006

02 / Monument

Once about half the town's land was onion fields;a monument to the growers stands west of Kasuga Shrine.

The stone monument on the west side of Kasuga Shrine was erected in 1913 to honour three Yoshimi farmers, credited with improving onion varieties and establishing production techniques. A town document cites a record that around 1942-43 about half of the town's land, before reclamation, was used for onions.

  • Erected in 1913
  • Honours three growers
  • Peak 90-94 ha (1942-43)

The main hall of Kasho Shrine is a single-bay nagare-zukuri building with a chidori-hafu gable and a karahafu eave gable. Osaka Bunkazai Navi says it dates from the early Edo period and conveys Momoyama architecture well; it is thought to be from the early 17th century and has been a prefectural tangible cultural property since 1976. The roof is copper, once cypress bark, and the interior is closed.

  • Prefectural designation, 31 May 1976
  • Single-bay nagare-zukuri
  • Thought to be early 17th century
