The Yanagikubo Plum Grove monument, inside a shrine in Yanagikubo, was made in 1857 and records a planting of plum trees. It carves the river's name with characters read Kurume, which the city calls the first appearance of that name. The Kurome River was written with other characters in Edo-period texts, and the village name coming from the river is the most common theory.
