The kakitsubata (rabbitear iris) colony at Kozutsumi Nishiike pond was designated a National Natural Monument in 1938. The pond was first an irrigation pond for rice fields, and in 1976 volunteers founded a society to protect the irises.

The Kariya City Museum of Local History is the former Kijo Elementary School main building, a two-story reinforced-concrete structure built in 1928. The state calls it a good example of early reinforced-concrete architecture in a provincial city; it was designed by a former prefectural technician who opened an architect's office in Kariya. It became a museum in 1980 and a nationally registered cultural property in 1999.
