In 1955, Kominato Town and two villages merged.

  • about 10,000 people
  • Rural district town

On March 31, 1955, Kominato Town, Higashi-Hiranai Village and Nishi-Hiranai Village merged into today's Hiranai Town. National Route 4 and the Aoimori Railway cross its center, and the Natsudomari Peninsula juts north into Mutsu Bay. Its main industries are farming, chiefly rice, and farmed scallops; the town writes that a local man studied cedar-leaf spat collection after the 1957 spat boom and put farming on track.
