In 1617 the shogunate had Toda Ujikane build Amagasaki Castle. It had three moats and a four-tier keep, and covered about 3.5 times the area of Koshien Stadium. In 1873 it was struck off and the buildings were pulled down. In 2015 the founder of a former electronics chain offered to build a keep and give it to the city; it opened to the public on 29 March 2019.

Once called a city of pollution. The measuring van has retired.

The city writes that its environment, once called a city of pollution, has improved greatly through the work of residents, businesses and government. Aozora-go (あおぞら号), the van that had measured air quality around the city since 1974, was withdrawn at the end of the 2024 fiscal year. The five permanent monitoring stations of 1974 have become sixteen.

  • Aozora-go ran from 1974 to the end of fiscal 2024
  • Monitoring stations went from five to sixteen
  • Named a national Environmental Model City in fiscal 2012

The city is a plain bounded by the Inagawa and Kanzaki rivers to the east and the Muko river to the west, with no mountains inside it. Factories pumping groundwater caused subsidence, and about a third of the city now lies below sea level. Typhoons flooded it, so a lock-type sea wall was built; the Amagasaki lock, finished in 1955, is known as Ama-Rokku (尼ロック) and is the largest lock in Japan.
