01 / The Buddhist statues of Kita-dera

Nine small statues, each under 1 m,are enshrined at Kita-dera.

The main image, a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai, stands 49.7 cm tall. There are also statues of Shaka Nyorai, bodhisattvas, Jikokuten and Zōchōten; all nine are carved from a single piece of kaya wood and are Important Cultural Properties (sculpture). Viewing requires a reservation in advance. The temple is said to have been built by Kūkai from timber cut for the western temple at Muroto (Kongōchō-ji).

02 / The Karanohama Group

Fossil shells and shark teeth lie in a stratumnamed after the place name Karahama.

The fossil digging site lies halfway up the mountain toward Kōnomine-ji (神峯寺), five minutes by car from National Route 55. In strata 2.7 to 2.6 million years old there are fossils of shells, fish and shark teeth from the Tosa Bay of that time. Signs explain the strata, and tools are lent free of charge. Contact the town board of education to use the site.

03 / Takamatsu Junzō and the Saishōka

A gōshi scholar gathered over 2,000 poemsinto the four volumes of the Saishōka.

Takamatsu Junzō (1807–1876) was a Confucian scholar and poet who inherited his gōshi (rural samurai) post at the age of eight. He was the husband of Chizuru, the eldest sister of Sakamoto Ryōma. People kept coming to learn from him, and many of them were loyalist activists, including Nakaoka Shintarō. His grave lies on the hill behind Yasuda Elementary School, where he rests with Chizuru.

In Aki District in eastern Kōchi, the town covers 52.36 km². Its south faces the Pacific, and the Yasuda River flows through its center. On the plain downstream, eggplant, myoga and okra are grown; in the mountains upstream, yuzu and wild yam. It became a town in 1925 and merged with Nakayama Village in 1943. It is about 70 minutes by car from Kōchi City, and the Gomen-Nahari Line runs through it.

  1. 01The Oomukae Tunnel in Ogawa, Yasuda, is a stone tunnel 36.7 m long, built in 1911 when the first section of the former Yanase Forest Railway opened. It is the third tunnel from the Tano side, has the numeral "Ⅲ" carved in the cornerstone of its portal, and is designated an Important Cultural Property.
  2. 02At Kita-dera in Bessho there are nine Buddhist statues designated Important Cultural Properties, and at the fossil digging site in Karahama visitors can dig in strata 2.7 to 2.6 million years old. The Yasuda Machinami Exchange Hall Nagomi (安田まちなみ交流館・和) introduces Takamatsu Junzō, a gōshi and poet.
  3. 03The town opened up along the Yasuda River, and buildings registered as Tangible Cultural Properties, such as the former Ichikawa Clinic (an early Taishō Western-style building) and the former Kashiwabara residence, remain in its streets. Yasuda Station on the Gomen-Nahari Line is the gateway.
