The city records that the framework of Omachi's town center was laid between the Kamakura and Muromachi periods by the Nishina clan's town planning. Behind the townhouses ran water drawn from the Kashima River; in front flowed the "Machigawa." Nyakuichioji Shrine was enshrined at the key point where that water was divided, at the northern edge of the town.
