01 / Iju Tafaku Dance

A Chinese-style dance of leaps and twists,carried on only in Iju, the village says.

Iju's Tafaku is a Chinese-style dance. Performers in bright costumes form a solemn procession and dance with many leaps and twists. Eleven dancers perform with three singers. The village says it is danced on the 15th day of the 8th month of the old calendar, and the preservation society also performs at events on request.

02 / Hanta Road, Arakaki

An old cliffside road survives for about 330 m in Arakaki,with two periods of paving found.

Hanta means a road along a cliff, and this one linked Shuri, Nakagusuku Castle and Katsuren Castle. In Arakaki about 330 m survives, and paving from around the 15th century and from the early modern period has been found. Along it, Banner Rock (Taachiishii) is a village-designated historic site where the Perry expedition is said to have raised a flag in 1853.

03 / Tomari's Great Kwadiisaa

A great tree said to have been plantedby an official sorry to leave.

Tomari's great kwadiisaa (Terminalia catappa) is a village-designated Natural Monument. About 200 years ago, an official sent from the Shuri court to the Nakagusuku district office is said to have planted it, sorry to part from the people of Tomari he had befriended, when his term ended. A well called Shichanuka is nearby.

Nakagusuku has no railway station, and its gateway is the village office. The village says it is about 45 minutes by car from Naha Airport up Route 329, or about 30 minutes by expressway, leaving at Nishihara or Kitanakagusuku. For buses, it gives about 10 minutes from the airport to Naha Bus Terminal, then about 50 minutes by Toyo Bus.
