01 / Temple town
The town founded in the Warring States erahad only four gated entrances.

Tondabayashi Jinaimachi was opened in the mid-16th century, when a priest of Kosho-ji Temple bought a plot of wasteland. Its development was entrusted to eight holders of village-headman status from four nearby villages. The six streets and seven blocks measure about 400 m east-west and 350 m north-south. Corner jogs called atemage, a protective moat and fragments of the earthen bank still recall the old town.
