Shinshūkan (進修館), a community center built to mark the town's 25th anniversary, opened in 1980 to a design by Team Zoo (象設計集団), later known for Nago City Hall in Okinawa. At first it drew a stream of complaints; today it is also a filming location for TV dramas. Kasahara Elementary School (笠原小学校), finished the following year in 1981, is by the same group and is said to have "changed school architecture".

Under its plan for "town-making with farming" (農のあるまちづくり), from 1998 the town developed the Yamazaki area as Atarashii Mura (新しい村, "the New Village"). Concrete banks were broken up into earthen channels and straight roads bent into S-curves, and at residents' urging the hottsuke-da (ほっつけ田), paddies raised from soil dug out of the marsh, were restored. In 2001 the farm stand Mori no Ichiba Yui (森の市場 結) opened.

Miyashiro was born in 1955 when the villages of Monma (百間) and Suka (須賀) merged. Its name takes 宮 (miya) from Himemiya Shrine (姫宮神社), the chief shrine of Monma, and 代 (shiro) from Konoshiro Shrine (身代神社), the chief shrine of Suka. The grounds of Himemiya Shrine hold a burial mound thought to date from the early 7th century, and the oldest record of the name Monma is an inscription dated 1414 on a waniguchi (鰐口) gong.
