A prince and a prime ministerboth lived here.

Higashiyama and Ninooka, at the foot of the Hakone mountains, have long been a villa district. The villa where Prince and Princess Chichibu lived for about ten years from 1941 was left to the city in the Princess’s will and opened as Chichibunomiya Memorial Park (秩父宮記念公園) in 2003. The house of former prime minister Kishi Nobusuke (1969, designed by Yoshida Isoya) is also open as the Higashiyama Former Kishi Residence (東山旧岸邸).

02 ／ Ekiden

A relay raceto the summit of Fuji and back.

A fixture of Gotemba’s summer, the Mt. Fuji Climbing Ekiden (富士登山駅伝) runs from the city athletics stadium to the summit of Mount Fuji and back. It has 11 stages over 48.19 km, with 3,199 m of climb. Stage 6, where runners get a stamp at the summit shrine, is steeper than 35 degrees; stages 7 and 8 plunge down the volcanic sand slopes. The overall winner receives the Prince Chichibu Memorial Cup.

03 ／ Soba

For celebrations,soba bound with mountain yam.

In the Gotemba area, hosts have long served handmade soba to guests at celebrations. This is Gotemba Mikuriya Soba (御殿場みくりやそば). The noodles are bound with yam or wild jinenjo yam, the broth is made with chicken, and the basic toppings are chicken, shiitake and carrot. The city calls it Gotemba’s soul food.
