Shizuoka is Japan’s No. 1 prefecture for water-grown wasabi, by volume and by value, and about 70% of its growing area is in Izu City. The tatami-ishi (畳石式) stacked-stone method, developed in the late Meiji era by Hirai Kumataro, a builder from Naka-Izu, spread across Japan. In 2018 “Traditional Wasabi Cultivation in Shizuoka” became a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

Tokko-no-yu (独鈷の湯) is said to be where Shuzenji Onsen began. In 807, the monk Kukai, moved by a boy washing his sick father in the Katsura River, is said to have struck a rock in the river with a ritual implement and made hot water spring up. Shuzenji is said to be the oldest hot spring town in Izu. Tokko-no-yu is now for viewing only.
