01 / Pass deity

At a border pass on the old Tosando road,a shrine worshipped as the pass's deity.

Oiwake-no-Myojin (Sumiyoshi Tamatsushima Shrine) is said to have been enshrined in 791 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, and was worshipped as the deity of a pass on the border of the Tosando road. The town's guide map also records that Sakai-no-Myojin (Tamatsushima Shrine) has long been worshipped as a pass deity.

02 / Old house

Beside the Seki road, the houseof a rotating village head and post-station agent.

The Mimori family house in Iono stands on the Seki road. It was the home of a village head who served in rotation and also acted as a post-station agent. The thatched, hip-roofed main house dates from 1733 and the gatehouse from 1902, and both buildings are Important Cultural Properties.

03 / Milestone mounds

Two milestone mounds still standon either side of the old Oshu road.

According to the town's guide map, the Meotoishi ichirizuka dates from around the opening of the Oshu road, late May 1604, and is the 43rd milestone mound counting from Edo's Nihonbashi. Two mounds remain, one on each side of the old Oshu road. The town has more ichirizuka at Itaya and Izumida.

The town gives about 1 hour 40 minutes from Tokyo to Nasu IC on the Tohoku Expressway, and about 25 to 30 minutes from Nasu IC to Ashino and Iono on Route 4 and prefectural roads. By train, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Nasushiobara Station, change at Kuroiso Station on the Tohoku Line, and ride about 10 minutes to Kurodahara Station (times are between stations and exclude transfers and waiting).
