Cut into a tuff slope on a hill at Wami, this is a yokoana tomb from the late Kofun period. The ceiling has a ridgepole shaped at its centre, with both sides sloped like a gabled roof; the town describes the whole chamber as resembling a house. 93 tombs have been confirmed around it, and it became a National Historic Site in 1934.

According to the shrine, the prefectural border runs through the middle of the great torii, the gate, the stone steps and the main hall beyond. It is one building, but as religious corporations it counts as two shrines, one in Tochigi and one in Ibaraki, with a shrine office in each prefecture. Even the name is read differently: Torinokosan Shojinja in Tochigi, Torinokosan Jojinja in Ibaraki.

03 / Natural monument

Blooming three times, about 15 days apart.

The weeping chestnut in the grounds of Batoin, planted on a cliff, has drooping branches like an umbrella and is said to bloom three times about 15 days apart, which is why it is also called the three-time chestnut. A prefectural natural monument, it is said to have been transplanted from Taga in Hitachi Province around 1692 to mark a visit by Mito's Tokugawa Mitsukuni.
