A National Historic Site: a seated Dainichi Nyorai of the Kongokai mandala, making the chiken-in mudra, is carved into a cliff called Kannon-iwa. The face alone is about 3 m long. Who carved it, and when, is uncertain, and a tradition says Kobo Daishi made it in a single night. Erosion has set in, but the prefecture notes the whole figure can be seen in the morning.

02 / Beech forest

Above slopes used for army horse ranches,an inubuna beech forest has been left.

A national natural monument at 860 to 980 m on Mount Takahara, upstream of Shojinzawa. Inubuna beech is said to have been felled early on, and the gentle slopes around were cleared and used for army horse ranches and the like, but this forest was hardly used. Forest on gentle slopes is very rare, and its scientific value is also said to be high.
