On 20 August 1961 a primary school teacher and his young son found the tip of a fossil on the Tama River bank. Excavation began on 28 August, and the fossil was restored over a year in a school's spare classroom. A 2018 paper recognized it as a new species of the gray whale genus, and the city has designated it a natural monument.

Dainichido is said by temple tradition to date from 952, and in 1732 it was moved to the top of the stone steps. Tokyo describes the precinct, with its guardian Hiyoshi Shrine, as one of the few places in the city to keep the old form of a Tendai temple, and has designated it along with the Haijima wisteria in its grounds.

03 / Festival

Before dawn, a sakaki-branch shrineis stripped bare in no time.

At Hiyoshi Shrine's annual festival, young men carry a mikoshi of sakaki branches on a wooden frame into the night streets after the first drum at midnight. Back at the shrine before dawn, they fight over the twigs until the tree is bare. A picture scroll from 1767 already shows its original form.
