The main halls of Tomiyoshi Takehaya Shrine and Hakkensha, together called Sunari Shrine, are roofed with cypress bark. The one on the right is a single-bay nagare-zukuri; the one on the left is a three-bay nagare-mise-dana-zukuri. The town points to the curve of the front-sloping roofs and the frog-leg struts (kaerumata), which show the shift toward the Momoyama period.

02 / Miyoshi-nagashi

Reeds carry the misfortunes onto the river, then rest on a rack and burn 75 days later.

A week before the morning festival, young men in white row down the Kanie River to its mouth and cut the reeds that become the sacred object. On the day after the morning festival, at dawn, the reeds bearing the misfortunes are floated off. In the past they were set adrift; now they are put on the river, laid on a rack at the shrine, and burned 75 days later.
