01 / Legend

A story of sake from a wellis said to be the town's name origin.

The town says sake coming from a well found by a dutiful son is held to be the origin of the name Shisui. The town board of education's signboard calls it a legend of three strands: the filial-sake tale, the place-name origin and the monument, and says a nearby stone tablet came to be called the Sake-no-i monument.

The Sumi lion dance is said to have begun when a teacher was invited from Mount Haguro in Dewa Province in 1734 (Kyoho 19) to teach it for the ceremony after Rokusho Shrine's new building. With three lions and one monkey, plus flute and drums, the town says it is performed every third Sunday of July at the shrine and the district head's house.
