The 67 crew of a wrecked British shipwere rescued by people of Chatan.
In 1840 the East India Company ship Indian Oak ran onto the reef off Chatan district. Its crew numbered 67. Villagers carried tools up from the broken ship, provided food such as rice, chickens, cattle and pigs along with clothing, and built huts for them to sleep in, the town's materials record.
