This was the home of the Majima family, eye doctors to the Takato domain in the Edo period. The city dates it to the Tenpo era (1830-43) and says a domain physician's house so little altered is rare even nationwide. Its layout matches that of a senior samurai, and it has a room for preparing medicine for examinations. It became a Nagano Prefecture Treasure in 2003.

Moriya Sadaji was a stonemason born in 1765 in a village of the Takato domain, now Osafuji in Takato. The city calls him a master of rare distinction who specialized in stone Buddhas and left 336 works in his 68 years. The city's plan says 44 works by Sadaji are among the stone Buddhas of Kenpuku-ji, a group designated by the city.

03 / Rite

A map of a mountain-boundary rulingcomes out of a sealed box to air.

The rite checks Shibira Yamaezu, a map that depicts the ruling in an Edo-period dispute over mountain boundaries. The city's plan says it is held every July 15. Delegates from six hamlets gather, take the large map and a papier-mache model of the mountain out of a sealed wooden box, and air them. Both the rite and the map were designated by the city in 2004.
